The World Senior Citizens Day is celebrated on 21st August every year. It was first proclaimed on 14th of December in the year 1990, by the United Nations General Assembly.
The day is celebrated to create an awareness of the factors and issues affecting older people and also to avoid the abuse of elderly people.
HISTORY:
“For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older – places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”
WHY IS IT CELEBRATED?
The main objective of celebrating World Senior Citizens Day is to create an awareness in the condition of elder people and also to help them.
The reason for celebrating this day is to thank and acknowledge elders. Elders, in general, do a lot for their children and have never been appreciated for the efforts they put in.
A lot of sacrifices are done in their entire life in nurturing their relationships. They have always been sensitive, protective and are selfless towards their children. For this, they need some recognition and some appreciation. Hence, this day is celebrated.
