Rumor: New LCD iPhone to Cost Only $699, iPhone XS to Start at $799

A new pricing report out of Europe may give us a clearer idea of just how much this year’s iPhones will cost.

Two separate sources indicated Apple’s pricing strategy to German-language blog Macerkpof, suggesting that the low-cost 6.1-inch iPhone could start at just $699 here in the U.S.

Now, to be clear, those sources didn’t reveal U.S. pricing to the German news site. Instead, they reportedly confirmed the euro pricing of the upcoming devices in Germany.

  • 6.1-inch LCD iPhone: 799 euros
  • iPhone Xs: 909 euros
  • iPhone Xs Plus: 1149 euros

It’s not possible to offer a direct currency conversion from euros to U.S. dollars due to a variety of factors, including sales tax in individual regions and the premium some countries pay on Apple devices.

But if you go to Apple’s German storefront, you can get an idea of how much the new iPhones will cost. For example, the iPhone 8 currently retails for 799 euros in Germany; the iPhone 8 Plus sells for 909 euros; and the iPhone X goes for 1149 euros.

As such, the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone could approximately start at $699 while the iPhone Xs would start at $799. The iPhone Xs Plus would take the top-tier price point at $999, which corroborates earlier pricing rumors.

These prices are for the baseline models. Increased storage capacities, like the rumored 256GB and 512GB options, could run their usual $150 premium over the standard model.

On the other hand, a $799 price point for the iPhone X successor would be a bit more than the $100 price drop that previous analyst reports have suggested. Based on Apple’s current pricing, a starting point of $899 seems to make more sense.

Of course, a $200 price drop would be a welcome change for consumers. And it might line-up with reports of Apple’s current pricing strategy.

It’s worth noting that pricing rumors are typically very hit-or-miss, but Macerkpof said its sources have been reliable in the past. So take that for what you will.

Still, we won’t have to wait long to find out how much the new iPhones will retail for. Apple is expected to debut all three devices at its Gather Round event next week. That keynote kicks off at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
