Starting on September 7th, 2018, Sony’s aftercare service for the PlayStation 2 will be no more.

That such a service still exists for a console originally released in the year 2000, is testament to the fact that the ‘PS2’ has the record for the world’s bestselling gaming console of all time.

The after care service has allowed fans of the PS2 to send in their broken consoles to be repaired by official Sony technicians for 18 years. However, the facility based in Japan will close its doors permanently from September 7th, this year for good.

The most successful games console of all time, the PS2 only ceased production in 2013. From September this month, Sony will no longer repair them.

As a mark of just how old the PS2 is, upon release its main competition was the Sega Dreamcast

The PS2 launched on March 4, 2000 (in Japan). It quickly went on to become the best-selling game console ever.

The final deadline for filling out online repair forms was August 31. Going forward, anyone with a broken PS2 will have to face fixing their machine by themselves. Customer support for the PS2 also officially ended at the end of August.

Sony has also announced that even those PS2s that are received may be unfixable due to the scarcity of parts left for the near 20 years old console.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, sold over 17,000,000 units alone for the PS2

While the news was without a doubt inevitable, it still marks the passing of an era.

The PlayStation 2 is still the best-selling video game console of all time, and over its 18 year run, sold over 155 million units.

According to the official PlayStation 2 Wiki, more than 3,874 game titles were released for the PS2, and more than 1.5 billion copies have been sold.

The PlayStation 2 ceased production worldwide in January, 2013.
